L-earn is our partnership project for 16-17s who are not in work, training or education.

We are working with partner organisations and the EFA to provide 30 jobs for unemployed young people in East Sussex.

L-earn aims to help young adults to develop the skills, experience, understanding, basic skills and confidence to progress into further training, apprenticeships or work. We achieve this by taking young people on as part-time paid employees within our organisation, alongside sessions with specialist trainers.

The jobs include Receptionist, Customer Service Assistant, Warehousing & Delivery, Computer Refurbishing and Furniture Workshop Assistant. Jobs are part-time for 6 months and come with training from specialists who can help young people improve their English and Maths, and achieve the entry requirements for work, College or Apprenticeships.

We do not currently have any vacancies.

The L-earn leaflet is available to download here.

Hear about L-earn from the young people who have taken part in these short videos:

This video features people who took part in the L-earn pilot project and was made by alternative education providers Entertainment Workshops.

HFS is working with other local social enterprises Hastings Trust, Furniture Now, Finding Futures, RVA, and Let's Do Business to offer the L-earn "earn while you learn" programme for young adults, building on the success of our pilot scheme in 2011.

About the Pilot of L-earn

The pilot programme, which focussed on particularly vulnerable young people in Hastings and Rother, was funded by East Sussex County Council and ran Jan-Sept 2011. In the pilot, young people were employed within local social enterprises for 6 months and offered a range of practical training couses (e.g. customer service, first aid at work) as well as sessions to improve their Literacy and Numeracy in small groups with specialist training providers Finding Futures.

The participants that attended Finding Futures improved their reading, writing and maths, on average by one whole level. They also attained other certificates and qualifications (e.g. level one Furniture Restoration) that boosted their confidence and built up the skills they can offer future employers.

Nine of our eleven pilot project participants progressed into work, apprenticeships, College or other training schemes.
